There is certification programs out there. There has been some talk about trying to mesh it all together as well. The short and skinny is not all energy auditors are certified and if I was to have one I would want to see a BPI or HERS certification.
An audit can be one of the most important things done to a new or old home. This is a scientific way of looking at a home and seeing how efficient it is and how healthy it will remain. I am a firm believer the no one should purchase a home without an energy audit new or old. I have looked at many new homes that passed building inspectors and the homeowners could not afford to heat them.
As far as a good one I think it is the common sense part again.

How long have they been in the building trades? If they have no clue how a house has been built then how can they inspect it properly.

Do you feel comfortable with them?

A typical audit is around $500 in our area and i have heard of people doing them for $100 and then trying to upsell everything.
