Insulating where soffit meets addition
I have an L-shaped ranch with an addition at the insde part of the "L". The addition was built about 6 feet away from the house so where the gutter line ended a (semi) flat roof extends toa vertical wall where the roof in the family room is higher. Basically I have a flat roof space about 12" high where the soffit and roof line meet the family room. I can add about an R-19 layer of fiberglass, but should I add foam board or sprayed-in insulation under the original roof sheeting to avoid heat transfer and ice-damming on the flat roof.
I can provide a picture or drawing if this would help.
Thanks,
Gary in Ohio

Good afternoon,
I have a bonus room (900 sq ft) which is built in the attic of the house. It is located over the interior of the house and free standing in the attic, wit the exception of the dormer and which allowas secondary exit from the room. The bonus room is NOT over the garage, but the the attic for the entire house is all open air (joined) together. there is no insulation in the attic over the garage and the rest of the house is insulated about 10" of cellulose. Tha bonus room roof and walls are only insulated with paper backed R-13 pink insulation. My questions are: 1) Is the R-13 insulation adequate for this room? If not, why? What is the required R-value needed for the bonus room walls & roof? What is the best and How do I go about bringing the insulation up to what is required?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Regards,
David Reno

I would like to upgrade my attic insulation. However, I understand that fiberglass insulation is now considered a suspected carcinogen. Cellulose insulation, I've been told, possibly is a fire hazard. Can you help with this dilemma? Also, are there any factors that affect the R-values of each material?

What is your favorite foam insulation?
Does anyone have foam insulation in their house or has been researching it? There's Soy Foam, Injection Foam, Urethane Foam, spray foam, pour foam, roofing foam, half pound foam, closed cell foam, it just gets to be a lot.
What are the pros and cons or what are you happy with or think are good products? We are looking at expanding our product lines and just were wondering what the public perception of foam insulation really is.
I appreciate your help!
Thanks!

I heard that trees and shading is a part of Green Building. How so?
Our builder is trying to talk us into an upgraded landscaping deal that he says will increase our energy efficiency by using the shade on the side of the house with the most sun. This sounds good for the summer, but what is the winter benefit? Wouldn't they cancel each other out?

Since Cellulose Insulation is made of Paper, is it a fire risk?
We are trying to decide whether to use fiberglass or cellulose in our home. We are concerned with fire safety. Any good answers out there or experiences? - I would like some studies or proof of claims if anyone has any that compare the two. Thanks.
